DRAFT
Statement:
Formation of "The Committee of 100 Muslims",
Amman, May 2006
The "Committee of 100 Muslims" has been inaugurated under the
chairmanship of HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal to articulate and
address the critical issues affecting Muslims around the world. It
aims to enable peaceful debate and discussion, using the power of
ideas as a means of calming conflict and finding a resolution to
problems of the gravest importance. The lack of intellectual
leadership exposed by recent events, in particular the cartoons
controversy, must be addressed with the utmost urgency to prevent
further rifts in human understanding. The committee proposes to
conquer immediate and future fears and misapprehensions, which are
so easily exploited by extremists of every kind. We pledge to
promote a rational and equitable understanding of hearts and minds.
The Committee believes that there is a peaceful solution to the
vital issues facing our world, whether within or between societies.
Each committee member, regardless of background, places the highest
value on integrity and independence, the two vital components of
credibility. We hope to be the voice of reason in the midst of
gathering chaos. We hope to be the eyes and ears of Muslims across
boundaries of nation, language and ethnicity. We actively seek to
address core disputes of international concern, to assuage anger,
and to prevent unacceptable provocations. We believe that through
dialogue and listening the world can discover an honest balance on
which our shared future can rest.
The committee of 100 Muslims
appreciates that it is undertaking a difficult and possibly
thankless task at a critical time. We are convinced that men and
women of good sense, who believe in a shared rather than an unequal
world order, must stand up to be counted amidst the prejudice and
ignorance that has blurred vision and undermined reasonable
dialogue.
